One pet or several
Learn each noun with its plural: der Hund → die Hunde, die Katze → die Katzen, das Kaninchen → die Kaninchen. Plural nouns use die.
Ich habe zwei Hunde.
I have two dogs.
Mara hat drei Katzen.
Mara has three cats.
Ben hat zwei Kaninchen.
Ben has two rabbits.
Wie viele Hunde hast du?
How many dogs do you have?
Wie viele asks how many and takes a plural noun. Wie viele Hunde hast du? asks for the number of dogs.

Animals on a farm
Some plurals change the vowel: die Kuh → die Kühe. Others add -e: das Pferd → die Pferde. Das Schaf → die Schafe also adds -e.
Hier sind drei Kühe.
There are three cows here.
Wir sehen zwei Pferde.
We see two horses.
Auf dem Hof sind vier Schafe.
There are four sheep on the farm.
Wie viele Kühe sind hier?
How many cows are here?
The number does not change the article pattern: die Kühe, die Pferde, die Schafe. After a number, usually omit the article.

At the zoo
More plurals to learn: der Vogel → die Vögel, der Elefant → die Elefanten and der Löwe → die Löwen. A dictionary gives the plural with the noun.
Die Vögel sind klein.
The birds are small.
Wir sehen zwei Elefanten.
We see two elephants.
Hier sind drei Löwen.
There are three lions here.
Die Katzen sind ruhig.
The cats are quiet.
Plural forms cannot always be guessed. Practice noun pairs aloud and use sind with plural subjects.
