About 5 minutes to read · 13 quiz questions

An adult chooses a coat and scarf from a simple clothes rail in a shop.

01

The coat becomes den Mantel

Der Mantel is a coat, der Pullover a jumper and der Schal a scarf. When these masculine nouns are the object of kaufen or tragen, der changes to den. Tragen means to wear or carry.

Ich kaufe den Mantel.

I buy the coat.

Ich trage den Pullover.

I am wearing the jumper.

Ben kauft den Schal.

Ben buys the scarf.

Der Mantel ist warm.

The coat is warm.

Compare Der Mantel ist warm with Ich kaufe den Mantel. The coat is the subject in the first sentence and the object in the second.

A shop display has a blue pair of trousers, a jacket, a shirt and a dress on separate hangers.

02

Die and das stay the same

Die Jacke is a jacket, die Hose a pair of trousers, das Hemd a shirt and das Kleid a dress. As direct objects, feminine die and neuter das keep the same form.

Ich kaufe die Jacke.

I buy the jacket.

Mara trägt die Hose.

Mara is wearing the trousers.

Ben trägt das Hemd.

Ben is wearing the shirt.

Mara kauft das Kleid.

Mara buys the dress.

German die Hose is singular even though English trousers is plural. Say Die Hose ist blau. Do not choose an article by the English translation.

A person packs shoes, socks, a belt and a small bag on a bedroom bench.

03

Shoes and accessories

Plural objects use die: die Schuhe, die Socken. A bag is die Tasche and a belt is der Gürtel. Use the noun's gender or plural form to choose the article.

Ich trage die Schuhe.

I am wearing the shoes.

Wir kaufen die Socken.

We buy the socks.

Ich kaufe den Gürtel.

I buy the belt.

Mara trägt die Tasche.

Mara is carrying the bag.

The pattern is der → den, die → die, das → das, plural die → die. Only masculine der changes in this set of definite accusative articles.
