01

Seven days

The days are Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag and Sonntag. Am introduces a day when you say when something happens.

Am Montag lerne ich Deutsch.

On Monday I learn German.

Am Dienstag hat Ben Zeit.

On Tuesday Ben has time.

Am Mittwoch arbeitet Mara.

On Wednesday Mara works.

Am Donnerstag lernen wir Deutsch.

On Thursday we learn German.

Am Montag means on Monday. The whole phrase Am Montag occupies one position before the verb, even though it has two words.

02

Plans for the weekend

The same word order works with the remaining days. If you start with the subject, the time phrase can come after the verb.

Am Freitag arbeite ich.

On Friday I work.

Am Samstag haben wir Zeit.

On Saturday we have time.

Am Sonntag bleibt Ben zu Hause.

On Sunday Ben stays at home.

Ich arbeite am Freitag.

I work on Friday.

Compare Ich arbeite am Freitag with Am Freitag arbeite ich. Both have the conjugated verb in second position.

03

Morning and evening

Use am with Morgen, Nachmittag and Abend too. In der Nacht is a useful phrase for at night.

Am Morgen trinke ich Tee.

In the morning I drink tea.

Am Nachmittag lernt Mara Deutsch.

In the afternoon Mara learns German.

Am Abend hören wir Musik.

In the evening we listen to music.

In der Nacht schläft Ben.

At night Ben sleeps.

Der Morgen means morning, der Nachmittag afternoon and der Abend evening. Do not confuse Morgen, the noun, with morgen meaning tomorrow.
