Furniture in a room
Learn the furniture names with their articles. These sentences introduce one object with ein or eine, following the pattern from the previous chapter.
Das ist ein Tisch.
This is a table.
Das ist ein Stuhl.
This is a chair.
Das ist eine Lampe.
This is a lamp.
Das ist ein Sofa.
This is a sofa.
The noun pairs are der Tisch, der Stuhl, die Lampe and das Sofa. A bed is das Bett and a cupboard or wardrobe is der Schrank.

Not a table
Kein negates a noun with an indefinite article. In these sentences after ist, ein becomes kein and eine becomes keine. The ending depends on the noun.
Das ist kein Tisch.
This is not a table.
Das ist kein Stuhl.
This is not a chair.
Das ist keine Lampe.
This is not a lamp.
Das ist kein Sofa.
This is not a sofa.
Use kein with masculine and neuter nouns here: kein Tisch, kein Sofa. Use keine with feminine nouns: keine Lampe. Do not add nicht to these simple noun phrases.

Check an empty room
Kein can also mean that no such object is there. Hier ist introduces what is or is not here. These examples keep the noun in the same grammatical role as before.
Hier ist kein Bett.
There is no bed here.
Hier ist kein Schrank.
There is no cupboard here.
Hier ist keine Lampe.
There is no lamp here.
Ist das ein Sofa? Nein, das ist ein Bett.
Is that a sofa? No, that is a bed.
Ein introduces one object; kein says not a or no. Eine Lampe becomes keine Lampe. You will learn plural nouns and more case forms in later chapters.
