About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Two friends discuss a weekend plan with a football, books and a cinema poster nearby.

01

Mögen means to like

Use mögen with things you like. The singular forms change: ich mag, du magst and er/sie mag.

Ich mag Musik.

I like music.

Magst du Fußball?

Do you like football?

Mara mag Bücher.

Mara likes books.

Wir mögen Filme.

We like films.

Use mögen for liking a thing, such as Musik. Use gern with an activity, such as Ich höre gern Musik. Möchte expresses a wish, which is different from a general like.

02

Say what is not true

Nicht can negate a statement or a description. In these simple examples it follows the object, or comes directly before the adjective.

Ich mag Fußball nicht.

I do not like football.

Der Film ist nicht gut.

The film is not good.

Das ist kein Film.

That is not a film.

Die Bücher sind nicht teuer.

The books are not expensive.

Ich mag Fußball nicht negates the liking. Der Film ist nicht gut negates gut. Kein instead negates a noun phrase with ein or an article-free noun.

03

A different weekend plan

Place nicht before the phrase you contrast. With a separable verb, nicht comes before the final prefix when it negates the action.

Ich komme nicht am Samstag, sondern am Sonntag.

I am coming on Sunday, not on Saturday.

Wir gehen nicht ins Kino, sondern ins Café.

We are going to the café, not to the cinema.

Ich kaufe heute nicht ein.

I am not going shopping today.

Ich rufe Ben heute nicht an.

I am not phoning Ben today.

Nicht am Samstag, sondern am Sonntag contrasts days. Sondern means but rather after a negative statement. These are specific plans, not general dislikes.
