01

The first half of the year

The months from January to June are Januar, Februar, März, April, Mai and Juni. Use im before a month to say when something happens. The month keeps its capital letter.

Ich habe im Januar Geburtstag.

My birthday is in January.

Der Kurs beginnt im Februar.

The course begins in February.

Wir reisen im März.

We travel in March.

Im April lerne ich Deutsch.

I study German in April.

Here, im combines in and dem. Say im März, not in März. A date such as a particular day uses a different expression, which you will learn later.

Two adults plan a summer trip at a table with a sunhat, a suitcase and an unlabelled calendar.

02

Summer and the rest of the year

The next months are Juli, August, September, Oktober, November and Dezember. Im works with every month. Compare im Mai and im Dezember: the preposition does not change.

Im Mai spielen wir Tennis.

We play tennis in May.

Der Kurs endet im Juni.

The course ends in June.

Im Juli reisen wir.

We travel in July.

Im August habe ich Urlaub.

I am on holiday in August.

A month phrase can come first or later: Im Juli reisen wir. Wir reisen im Juli. If the phrase comes first, the subject follows the verb.

Four views of the same park show spring blossom, summer greenery, autumn leaves and winter snow.

03

Four seasons

The four seasons are der Frühling, der Sommer, der Herbst and der Winter. Use im with seasons too. In this example year, the plans run from a September course to a December holiday.

Im September beginnt der Kurs.

The course begins in September.

Im Oktober und im November ist es Herbst.

It is autumn in October and November.

Im Dezember ist es Winter.

It is winter in December.

Im Frühling und im Sommer spielen wir draußen.

We play outside in spring and summer.

Im Sommer means in summer; im Winter means in winter. In German, nouns such as Sommer, Herbst and September begin with a capital letter.
