01

Details on a form

A form often asks for a name, address and date of birth. These examples use fictional details. Learn the questions and answers as short phrases.

Ich heiße Sara Weber.

My name is Sara Weber.

Meine Adresse ist Parkstraße 10.

My address is 10 Parkstraße.

Mein Geburtstag ist am 3. Mai.

My birthday is on 3 May.

Wie ist Ihre Adresse?

What is your address?

Name means name, Adresse means address and Geburtsdatum means date of birth. Geburtstag means birthday. The phrase am 3. Mai is pronounced am dritten Mai; dates will be practised in a later chapter.

02

Haben: to have

Haben is not fully regular. Learn du hast and er/sie/es hat without a b. Notice how a yes/no question puts the same verb form first.

Ich habe Zeit.

I have time.

Hast du Zeit?

Do you have time?

Er hat Zeit.

He has time.

Sie hat eine Frage.

She has a question.

The singular forms are ich habe, du hast, er/sie/es hat. Zeit means time and eine Frage means a question. Here sie means she.

03

More than one person

Use haben with wir and with sie meaning they. Polite Sie also uses haben. The informal plural ihr takes habt.

Wir haben Zeit.

We have time.

Habt ihr eine Frage?

Do you all have a question?

Sie haben Zeit.

They have time.

Haben Sie eine E-Mail-Adresse?

Do you have an email address?

The full pattern is ich habe, du hast, er/sie/es hat, wir haben, ihr habt, sie/Sie haben. In the last question, capitalized Sie addresses someone politely.
