About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

01
Ask the price
Wie viel kostet asks the price of one thing. For several things, use kosten. Prices here are invented examples for language practice.
Wie viel kostet das Buch?
How much does the book cost?
Wie viel kosten die Hefte?
How much do the notebooks cost?
Das Heft kostet zwei Euro.
The notebook costs two euros.
Der Stift kostet fünfzig Cent.
The pen costs fifty cents.
Der Euro is the currency unit and der Cent is a smaller unit. In prices after numbers, Euro and Cent usually stay unchanged.
02
Hundreds
German number words below a million are written together. Hundert and einhundert both mean 100. Here we use einhundert.
100 heißt einhundert.
100 is called one hundred.
200 heißt zweihundert.
200 is called two hundred.
125 heißt einhundertfünfundzwanzig.
125 is called one hundred and twenty-five.
1.000 heißt eintausend.
1,000 is called one thousand.
For 125, combine einhundert with fünfundzwanzig. The units come before the tens in the final part, just as with numbers below 100.
03
Paying
German writes a decimal price with a comma. You can say both euros and cents explicitly. Learn the payment phrases as whole expressions.
2,50 Euro sind zwei Euro fünfzig Cent.
2.50 euros is two euros and fifty cents.
3,20 Euro sind drei Euro zwanzig Cent.
3.20 euros is three euros and twenty cents.
Ich bezahle bar.
I pay in cash.
Ich bezahle mit Karte.
I pay by card.
Bar means in cash. Mit Karte means by card. Das macht introduces the total.
