01
Describe the problem
In this fictional shop, Lea returns a damaged cup. Dass introduces what someone says, notices or knows. Put the conjugated verb at the end of the dass clause.
Lea sagt, dass die Tasse kaputt ist.
Lea says that the cup is broken.
Sie zeigt, dass die Tasse einen Riss hat.
She shows that the cup has a crack.
Der Verkäufer sieht, dass die Tasse beschädigt ist.
The shop assistant sees that the cup is damaged.
Lea erklärt, dass sie den Kassenbon hat.
Lea explains that she has the receipt.
Compare Die Tasse ist kaputt with dass die Tasse kaputt ist. The comma separates the main clause from the dass clause. Kaputt means broken.
02
Respond and apologise
The shop assistant listens and apologises. A dass clause can follow Es tut mir leid. It states what the speaker is sorry about. The apology does not change the verb-final pattern.
Es tut mir leid, dass die Tasse kaputt ist.
I am sorry that the cup is broken.
Der Verkäufer sagt, dass das ein Fehler ist.
The shop assistant says that this is a mistake.
Lea sagt, dass sie nicht zufrieden ist.
Lea says that she is not satisfied.
Es tut mir leid, dass Sie unzufrieden sind.
I am sorry that you are dissatisfied.
An apology begins Es tut mir leid. A mistake is ein Fehler. Check the subject of each clause before choosing ist or sind.
03
Discuss a refund
Lea asks for her money back. In this fictional exchange, the assistant agrees. These sentences describe their agreement, not a general rule about refunds.
Lea sagt, dass sie ihr Geld zurückhaben möchte.
Lea says that she would like her money back.
Der Verkäufer bestätigt, dass Lea ihr Geld zurückbekommt.
The shop assistant confirms that Lea will get her money back.
Lea sagt, dass sie den Kassenbon hier lässt.
Lea says that she is leaving the receipt here.
Der Verkäufer sagt, dass die Rückzahlung heute kommt.
The shop assistant says that the refund will arrive today.
Das Geld zurückbekommen means to get the money back. In a dass clause, the separable verb stays together at the end: zurückbekommt.
