01
Cook with one friend
In this fictional cooking session, Nina gives her friend Tom instructions for soup. A du command usually uses the verb stem without du. Put the command first.
Wasch die Karotten!
Wash the carrots!
Schneide die Zwiebel!
Cut the onion!
Gib die Karotten in den Topf!
Put the carrots into the pot!
Rühr die Suppe um!
Stir the soup!
Schneiden uses schneide, with a final e. For the other commands here, use wasch, gib and rühr. Gib is the irregular command from geben.
02
Measure the ingredients
Nina writes the quantities beside the recipe. Use numbers with units such as Gramm and Liter. Ein Esslöffel is a tablespoon, and ein Teelöffel is a teaspoon.
Nimm 200 Gramm Karotten!
Take 200 grams of carrots!
Gib einen Liter Wasser in den Topf!
Pour one litre of water into the pot!
Nimm einen Esslöffel Öl!
Take one tablespoon of oil!
Gib einen halben Teelöffel Salz dazu!
Add half a teaspoon of salt!
After a quantity, the ingredient follows directly: 200 Gramm Karotten. The quantity words Gramm and Liter keep these forms after the numbers used here.
03
Cook together
Two more friends join Nina. For a group you know well, use the ihr verb form without ihr. With a formal Sie command, keep Sie after the verb.
Wascht die Kartoffeln!
Wash the potatoes!
Schneidet die Kartoffeln klein!
Cut the potatoes into small pieces!
Geben Sie die Kartoffeln in den Topf!
Put the potatoes into the pot!
Rühren Sie die Suppe um!
Stir the soup!
Compare wasch for one friend, wascht for several friends, and waschen Sie for formal address. The command still comes first.
