02
Start with the time clause
An als clause can stand first. It fills the first position, so the main clause starts with its verb: Als Oma kam, waren wir zu Hause. Use a comma between the clauses.
Als Oma kam, waren wir zu Hause.
When Grandma arrived, we were at home.
Als die Feier begann, hat Mara gelacht.
When the celebration began, Mara laughed.
Wir waren müde, als die Feier endete.
We were tired when the celebration ended.
Als Ben ankam, haben wir gegessen.
When Ben arrived, we ate.
The other order is possible too: Wir waren zu Hause, als Oma kam. The verb in the als clause stays last in both orders.
03
Remember a past period
Als can also refer to one past period: Als ich klein war, haben wir oft zusammen gefeiert. The period of being small happened once, even if celebrations repeated within it.
Als ich klein war, wohnten wir in Bonn.
When I was little, we lived in Bonn.
Als ich ein Kind war, hatten wir einen Hund.
When I was a child, we had a dog.
Immer wenn Oma kam, gab es Kuchen.
Whenever Grandma came, there was cake.
Als wir Kinder waren, haben wir oft gespielt.
When we were children, we often played.
To stress repeated separate occasions, use immer wenn: Immer wenn Oma kam, gab es Kuchen. Match als or wenn to the time meaning.
