01

Make a plan to meet

Lea and Sam arrange coffee. Sich treffen needs a pronoun that matches the subject. Learn the small word as part of the phrase: ich treffe mich, du triffst dich, wir treffen uns.

Ich treffe mich heute mit Sam.

I am meeting Sam today.

Triffst du dich oft mit Lea?

Do you often meet up with Lea?

Wir treffen uns am Samstag.

We are meeting on Saturday.

Wir treffen uns um drei im Café.

We are meeting at three in the cafe.

The vowel changes with du: treffen → du triffst. With wir, uns refers to the people meeting each other. Mit names the other person in ich treffe mich mit Sam.

02

Looking forward and being pleased

A meeting can make you happy before it happens and when you hear about it. Sich freuen auf looks forward to something. Sich freuen über expresses pleasure about something, such as a message you have received.

Ich freue mich auf das Treffen.

I am looking forward to the meeting.

Freust du dich auf Samstag?

Are you looking forward to Saturday?

Sam freut sich über die Nachricht.

Sam is pleased about the message.

Wir freuen uns auf das Wochenende.

We are looking forward to the weekend.

Match the pronoun to the subject: ich freue mich, du freust dich, er freut sich, wir freuen uns. Here auf and über take the accusative: auf das Treffen, über die Nachricht.

03

Keep in touch

Lea is busy this week, but she wants to stay in contact. Sich melden means to get in touch. For ihr, use euch. For sie meaning they, use sich.

Ich melde mich morgen.

I will get in touch tomorrow.

Wann meldest du dich?

When will you get in touch?

Meldet ihr euch am Sonntag?

Will you get in touch on Sunday?

Lea und Sam treffen sich jede Woche.

Lea and Sam meet up every week.

With a question word, keep the verb before the subject: Wann meldest du dich? Without a question word, the verb comes first: Meldet ihr euch? In both questions the reflexive pronoun follows the subject.
