Furnishing a flat

Shop for furniture and decorations using adjective endings in accusative phrases.

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Two flatmates browse a furniture shop with a wooden table, a small sofa, lamps and colourful cushions.

01

A shopping list for the flat

Ada and Nils need furniture. Kaufen, suchen and brauchen take an accusative object. With a masculine noun, ein becomes einen and the adjective ends in -en. Feminine eine and neuter ein keep their forms.

Wir brauchen einen neuen Tisch.

We need a new table.

Ich suche eine helle Lampe.

I am looking for a bright lamp.

Nils kauft ein kleines Sofa.

Nils is buying a small sofa.

Wir brauchen keinen großen Schrank.

We do not need a large cupboard.

Compare einen neuen Tisch, eine helle Lampe and ein kleines Sofa. The article and adjective describe the object being bought or sought. Learn the gender with each furniture word.

02

Choose a particular piece

In the shop, use der, die and das forms for particular objects. The masculine accusative article is den, and its adjective ends in -en. With singular feminine die or neuter das, the adjective ends in -e.

Wir nehmen den runden Tisch.

We will take the round table.

Ich kaufe die weiße Lampe.

I am buying the white lamp.

Nils nimmt das breite Regal.

Nils is taking the wide shelving unit.

Wir kaufen die weichen Kissen.

We are buying the soft cushions.

For objects, compare den runden Tisch, die weiße Lampe and das breite Regal. Plural die takes -en: die weichen Kissen. The verb does not decide the noun's gender.

03

Finish the room

Now the flatmates decide what fits in the room. The furniture is still an accusative object after stellen or legen. A separate phrase tells you where they put it. Keep those two phrases apart when choosing endings.

Wir stellen einen bequemen Sessel neben das Sofa.

We put a comfortable armchair next to the sofa.

Ich lege einen roten Teppich vor das Sofa.

I put a red rug in front of the sofa.

Nils kauft ein schönes Bild.

Nils is buying a beautiful picture.

Wir wollen keine dunklen Vorhänge.

We do not want dark curtains.

Einen roten Teppich is the object; vor das Sofa is its destination. Compare keine dunklen Vorhänge with plural die weichen Kissen from the shop. After plural keine or die, use -en.
