01

Report what someone says

In this fictional conversation, Ben repeats advice from his doctor. Sollen reports what someone else asks or advises a person to do. It does not mean that the speaker personally wants to do it.

Der Arzt sagt, ich soll regelmäßig essen.

The doctor says I should eat regularly.

Ich soll Wasser trinken.

I am supposed to drink water.

Du sollst jeden Tag spazieren gehen.

You are supposed to go for a walk every day.

Ben soll eine Pause machen.

Ben is supposed to take a break.

Ich soll and er soll have no ending. Du takes sollst. Keep the activity verb in the infinitive at the end: Wasser trinken, spazieren gehen. These sentences practise reported advice, not personal health recommendations.

02

Advice for more than one person

Ben and his friends compare suggestions they have received. With wir, meaning we, and sie, meaning they, use sollen. With ihr, use sollt. Each sentence reports a plan or suggestion from somebody else.

Wir sollen regelmäßig schlafen.

We are supposed to sleep regularly.

Ihr sollt abends das Handy weglegen.

You are supposed to put your phones away in the evening.

Die Freunde sollen Pausen machen.

The friends are supposed to take breaks.

Wir sollen Gemüse zum Mittagessen essen.

We are supposed to eat vegetables with lunch.

The forms are ich soll, du sollst, er or sie soll, wir sollen, ihr sollt and sie sollen. Sleep is schlafen, movement is Bewegung, and vegetables are Gemüse.

03

Ask about the advice

Ben checks what the advice means. In a yes-or-no question, soll comes before the subject. In a question with was, the question word comes first. A negative sentence can report advice to avoid an activity.

Soll ich heute spazieren gehen?

Am I supposed to go for a walk today?

Was soll ich abends machen?

What am I supposed to do in the evening?

Ich soll abends keinen Kaffee trinken.

I am supposed to avoid drinking coffee in the evening.

Ich will heute früh schlafen gehen.

I want to go to bed early today.

Compare soll with will. Soll reports an expectation or advice; will describes a personal intention. In ich soll nicht, nicht negates the activity. Keep the infinitive at the end even when the sentence is a question.
