01

Travel from one place to another

Aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von and zu always take the dative. Use mit for transport, aus for coming out of a place and von for a starting point.

02

Bei locates something near or at a place. Zu gives a destination. Bei dem becomes beim; zu dem becomes zum and zu der becomes zur. Nach also takes the dative, though city names usually show no article.

Talk about a delay

Seit gives a starting point or duration continuing up to now. German normally uses the present: Ich warte seit einer Stunde. Nach can also mean after and takes the dative.

I have been waiting for an hour.

Wir warten seit zehn Minuten.

We have been waiting for ten minutes.

Nach der Fahrt trinken wir Kaffee.

After the journey we will drink coffee.
