An adult browses an online shop on a laptop beside a parcel.

I would order

Würde plus an infinitive describes an imagined action or a tentative wish. Use ich würde, du würdest and er/sie würde. The infinitive stays at the end: Ich würde das Buch bestellen.

Ich würde das Buch bestellen.

I would order the book.

Du würdest die Lieferung prüfen.

You would check the delivery.

Mara würde das Paket zurückschicken.

Mara would send the parcel back.

Wir würden gern zwei Bücher bestellen.

We would like to order two books.

Bestellen means to order, liefern to deliver and zurückschicken to send back. With separable verbs, the infinitive stays together after würde.

A customer phones support while checking the contents of a delivery box.

Could you help?

Könnte makes a request less direct than kann. Use ich könnte, du könntest, er/sie könnte and wir/Sie könnten. For a polite request to customer service, put Könnten Sie at the start.

Könnten Sie die Bestellung prüfen?

Could you check the order?

Könntest du das Paket abholen?

Could you collect the parcel?

Könnte ich die Lieferadresse ändern?

Could I change the delivery address?

Könnten Sie bitte morgen liefern?

Could you please deliver tomorrow?

Die Bestellung is the order, die Lieferung the delivery and die Rücksendung the return shipment. Bitte makes the request explicitly polite.

An adult prepares a parcel for return, with packing paper and a blank return slip.

Explain a possible next step

Würde can express a proposed action, while könnte can express a possibility. Both take an infinitive without zu. With a time phrase first, the modal still comes second.

Ich würde gern die Bestellung stornieren.

I would like to cancel the order.

Morgen könnte ich das Paket abholen.

I could collect the parcel tomorrow.

Wir könnten die Rücksendung vorbereiten.

We could prepare the return shipment.

Würdet ihr die Bestellung prüfen?

Would you check the order?

Ich würde gern ... is useful for a polite wish. The shop's actual conditions decide whether a return or change is possible; these are practice messages.
