01
Asking for help politely
An imperative like Hilf mir! can sound too direct. A question with könnten, könntest, würden or würdest sounds much more polite. In a yes/no question this verb comes first; after a question word like was it comes second. The infinitive goes to the end.
Könnten Sie mir einen Rat geben?
Could you give me some advice?
Was würden Sie mir raten?
What would you advise me to do?
Könntest du mir kurz helfen?
Could you help me for a moment?
Würdest du dir meinen Brief bitte ansehen?
Would you have a look at my letter, please?
Use könnten and würden with Sie, könntest and würdest with du. Der Rat is advice, raten means to advise and sich etwas ansehen means to have a look at something.
02
Giving advice gently
When you give advice, sollte sounds friendlier than an order: Du solltest mehr schlafen. Vielleicht könntest du … and es wäre besser, wenn … are even softer. All of these avoid the imperative.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| imperative | Schlaf mehr! |
| polite question | Könntest du mehr schlafen? |
| advice | Du solltest mehr schlafen. |
| soft suggestion | Vielleicht könntest du mehr schlafen. |
Du solltest mehr schlafen.
You should sleep more.
Sie sollten mit Ihrer Chefin sprechen.
You should talk to your boss.
Vielleicht könntest du deine Schwester um Hilfe bitten.
Maybe you could ask your sister for help.
Es wäre besser, wenn du früher ins Bett gehen würdest.
It would be better if you went to bed earlier.
Sollte forms: du solltest, Sie sollten. In the wenn-clause, würdest and the infinitive go to the end: wenn du früher ins Bett gehen würdest. Jemanden um Hilfe bitten means to ask someone for help.
03
An advice column
In an advice column, readers describe a problem and an expert answers. Aylin writes about a noisy neighbour. The answer uses polite suggestions instead of commands.
Ich habe ein Problem mit meinem Nachbarn.
I have a problem with my neighbour.
Er hört jede Nacht laute Musik.
He listens to loud music every night.
Wie wäre es, wenn Sie zuerst mit ihm reden würden?
How about talking to him first?
Sie könnten ihm auch einen Brief schreiben.
You could also write him a letter.
Wie wäre es, wenn … is a friendly way to suggest something; würden and the infinitive go to the end of the wenn-clause. Sie könnten … means you could …
