Adult guests sit at marble tables in a traditional Viennese-style coffee house with large mirrors and a waiter carrying a tray.

01

Wiens Cafés: -s before the noun

With names of people, cities and most countries, the genitive is simply -s, placed before the noun: Wiens Cafés, Österreichs Hauptstadt. The noun after it has no article. You met this pattern with Evas Handy; here it describes places.

Wiens Kaffeehäuser sind berühmt.

Vienna's coffee houses are famous.

Wien ist Österreichs Hauptstadt.

Vienna is Austria's capital.

Wir besuchen Salzburgs Altstadt.

We are visiting Salzburg's old town.

Lenas Reise beginnt in Wien.

Lena's trip starts in Vienna.

German does not use an apostrophe here: Wiens, not Wien's. Das Kaffeehaus is the Austrian word for café, die Hauptstadt is the capital and die Altstadt the old town.

02

Goethes Werke: names of people

The same -s works for people: Goethes Werke, Pauls Kollege. If a name already ends in -s, -ß, -x or -z, write an apostrophe instead of another s: Jonas' Freundin. In speech, many people use von instead: die Musik von Mozart.

Nora mag Mozarts Musik.

Nora likes Mozart's music.

Jonas' Freundin kommt aus Zürich.

Jonas's girlfriend comes from Zurich.

Pauls Kollege spricht Schweizerdeutsch.

Paul's colleague speaks Swiss German.

Das ist die Musik von Mozart.

This is the music of Mozart.

Use only one form per noun: Mozarts Musik or die Musik von Mozart, never die Mozarts Musik. Schweizerdeutsch is the Swiss German that people speak in everyday life.

03

der Schweiz: countries with an article

Feminine countries with an article, such as die Schweiz, do not take -s. Only the article changes in the genitive: die Schweiz becomes der Schweiz, so you say die Berge der Schweiz. Österreich has no article, so it takes -s: Österreichs Berge.

Die Berge der Schweiz sind im Winter voller Touristen.

Switzerland's mountains are full of tourists in winter.

Die Schweiz hat vier Landessprachen.

Switzerland has four national languages.

Zürich ist die größte Stadt der Schweiz.

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland.

Österreichs Berge sind auch sehr beliebt.

Austria's mountains are also very popular.

Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. In Switzerland people write ss instead of ß, for example Strasse instead of Straße. Grüezi is a Swiss greeting.
