01

What would have happened: hätte

To talk about something that did not happen in the past, use the Konjunktiv II of haben or sein plus a past participle: Ich hätte mehr Wasser getrunken. Verbs that take haben in the Perfekt take hätte here.

What would have happened: hätte
Personhabensein
Ihättewäre
you (informal)hättestwärst
he / she / ithättewäre
wehättenwären
you (plural)hättetwärt
they / you (formal)hättenwären

In your place I would have drunk more water.

We would have liked to eat less meat, but we had no time to cook.

Without the app I would never have started jogging.

With a plan you would have done more sport.

Hatte without an umlaut is the normal past tense; hätte with an umlaut is unreal. With gern it expresses a past wish: Wir hätten gern weniger gegessen. An deiner Stelle means in your place, or if I were you.

02

Movement and change: wäre

Verbs of movement and change, and sein itself, take sein in the Perfekt, so here they take wäre: Ich wäre früher aufgestanden.

Without an alarm I wouldn't have got up so early.

Mit dem Fahrrad wären wir schneller gewesen.

By bike we would have been faster.

In your place I would have walked.

Without my girlfriend I would never have gone to the gym.

Do not combine würde with a participle for the past: say wäre … gegangen, not würde … gegangen. Das Fitnessstudio is the gym.

03

If only: wenn … hätte

In a wenn-clause about a past that did not happen, hätte or wäre goes to the very end, after the participle. The main clause can describe the past (hätten wir Geld gespart) or the present (wäre ich jetzt nicht so müde).

If I had gone to bed earlier, I wouldn't be so tired now.

If we had cooked more, we would have saved money.

If Eva had known that, she would have gone to the doctor earlier.
