About 5 minutes to read · 13 quiz questions

Residents review a fictional town's climate project report beside model buildings and solar panels.

01

What has been done?

The passive Perfekt uses sein, the main verb's participle and worden: Der Bericht ist veröffentlicht worden. It reports a completed action. This chapter describes projects in an invented town.

Der Klimabericht ist veröffentlicht worden.

The climate report has been published.

Der Energieverbrauch ist gemessen worden.

Energy consumption has been measured.

Das Dach ist gedämmt worden.

The roof has been insulated.

Eine Solaranlage ist installiert worden.

Use worden, without ge-, for the passive. Geworden belongs to werden meaning become, as in Es ist wärmer geworden. Veröffentlichung means publication; Emissionen means emissions.

02

Several projects

Plural subjects use sind, but the participles do not change: Die Bäume sind gepflanzt worden. The structure stays the same even when a time phrase starts the sentence.

Neue Bäume sind gepflanzt worden.

New trees have been planted.

Die Gebäude sind gedämmt worden.

The buildings have been insulated.

Die Emissionen sind untersucht worden.

The emissions have been investigated.

Im letzten Jahr sind zwei Radwege gebaut worden.

Two cycle paths were built last year.

Die Emissionen are emissions, die Bäume trees and die Gebäude buildings. The examples state what happened in the invented town; they do not describe measured real-world results.

03

Passive or become?

Compare an action done to something with a change in its condition. Die Straße ist gesperrt worden is passive. Die Stadt ist wärmer geworden uses werden meaning become. Only the second construction uses geworden.

Die Straße ist für Autos gesperrt worden.

The street has been closed to cars.

In der Geschichte ist die Stadt wärmer geworden.

In the story, the town has become warmer.

Wir wissen, dass der Bericht veröffentlicht worden ist.

We know that the report has been published.

Eva sagt, dass neue Bäume gepflanzt worden sind.

Eva says that new trees have been planted.

In a dass-clause, the finite auxiliary goes last: dass der Bericht veröffentlicht worden ist. Keep the main participle and worden together before it.
