01
aber: a contrast
Aber links two ideas that contrast but are both true: Jonas ist direkt, aber nie unhöflich. The second part adds something unexpected or limits the first part.
Jonas ist sehr direkt, aber nie unhöflich.
Jonas is very direct but never rude.
Die Kritik war klar, aber freundlich formuliert.
The criticism was clear but phrased in a friendly way.
Ich verstehe deinen Punkt, aber ich sehe das anders.
I understand your point, but I see it differently.
Die Besprechung war kurz, aber sehr produktiv.
The meeting was short but very productive.
Aber does not change the word order: after aber, subject and verb follow as in a normal main clause. Direkt means direct, höflich polite and unhöflich rude.
02
sondern: not this, but that
Sondern corrects a negative statement. The first part says what is not true, and the second part gives the right alternative: Das Treffen ist nicht am Montag, sondern am Dienstag. It always needs nicht or kein before it.
Herr Weber kritisiert nicht die Person, sondern die Idee.
Mr Weber doesn't criticise the person, but the idea.
Das Treffen ist nicht am Montag, sondern am Dienstag.
The meeting isn't on Monday, but on Tuesday.
Wir sprechen nicht über Fehler, sondern über Lösungen.
We don't talk about mistakes, but about solutions.
Er hat nicht angerufen, sondern eine kurze Nachricht geschickt.
He didn't call, but sent a short message instead.
If both parts share the subject and verb, you can leave them out after sondern. Die Kritik means criticism; die Lösung means the solution.
03
Direct and indirect styles
Indirect speakers often soften a no with aber: Die Idee ist interessant, aber … Direct speakers often correct with nicht …, sondern. After a negative, use aber when the second part adds something, and sondern when it replaces the first part.
