01
On the one hand, on the other hand
Einerseits … andererseits presents two sides of one question. When einerseits or andererseits starts a clause, it takes position one, so the verb comes next and the subject follows it. Both words can also stand inside a sentence, after the verb.
| Position | Example |
|---|---|
| first in the clause | Einerseits ist die Wohnung billig. |
| first in the next clause | Andererseits ist sie klein. |
| inside the sentence | Die Wohnung ist einerseits billig, andererseits klein. |
Einerseits ist die Luft in der Innenstadt besser.
On the one hand, the air in the city centre is better.
Andererseits haben die Geschäfte weniger Kunden.
On the other hand, the shops have fewer customers.
Einerseits ist das Homeoffice bequem, andererseits fehlen die Kollegen.
On the one hand, working from home is comfortable; on the other hand, you miss your colleagues.
Ein Auto ist einerseits praktisch, andererseits teuer.
A car is practical on the one hand and expensive on the other.
Einerseits ist die Luft besser, not Einerseits die Luft ist besser. Die Innenstadt is the city centre and das Homeoffice means working from home.
02
Pros and cons
In a discussion you collect arguments for and against an idea. Der Vorteil is an advantage and der Nachteil a disadvantage. Dafür means for it and dagegen means against it.
Ein großer Vorteil ist der Preis.
One big advantage is the price.
Der größte Nachteil ist der Lärm.
The biggest disadvantage is the noise.
Was spricht dafür, und was spricht dagegen?
What speaks for it, and what speaks against it?
Murat ist dagegen, weil die Mieten steigen.
Murat is against it because rents are rising.
Ein großer Vorteil takes the ending -er after ein; after der the superlative is der größte Nachteil. Die Miete is the rent and der Lärm is noise.
03
Taking part in a debate
Auf der einen Seite … auf der anderen Seite works like einerseits … andererseits and also takes position one. To give your view, start with meiner Meinung nach, which is also followed by the verb.
Auf der einen Seite spart man Zeit.
On the one hand, you save time.
Auf der anderen Seite verliert man den Kontakt.
On the other hand, you lose contact.
Meiner Meinung nach überwiegen die Vorteile.
In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Da bin ich anderer Meinung.
I disagree with that.
Ich bin deiner Meinung means I agree with you; ich bin anderer Meinung means I disagree. Überwiegen means to outweigh.
