01
Real conditions: wenn and falls
A real condition can actually happen. Both wenn and falls introduce it, and the verb goes to the end of the clause. Falls stresses that something might happen: in case. When the condition comes first, the main clause starts with its verb.
Wenn ich die Prüfung bestehe, kann ich als Pilotin arbeiten.
If I pass the exam, I can work as a pilot.
Falls die Stelle frei wird, bewerbe ich mich sofort.
If the position becomes available, I'll apply immediately.
Falls du Fragen hast, ruf mich an.
If you have any questions, call me.
Immer wenn Jonas kocht, träumt er von einem eigenen Restaurant.
Whenever Jonas cooks, he dreams of his own restaurant.
Immer wenn means whenever; falls is not possible there. Die Prüfung bestehen means to pass the exam, and sich bewerben means to apply for a job.
02
Unreal conditions with wenn
An unreal condition describes a dream or an imagined situation. It uses wenn with Konjunktiv II: wäre, hätte or würde plus an infinitive. Falls is used mainly for real possibilities, so use wenn for dreams like these.

If I were braver, I would become an actress.

If Paul had money, he would open a café.

Both clauses use Konjunktiv II: Wenn Paul Geld hätte, würde er ein Café eröffnen. Werden means to become, so Schauspielerin werden means to become an actress.
03
Real or unreal?
The verb form tells you how likely something is. With the indicative, the speaker expects that it can happen. With Konjunktiv II, the speaker presents it as unreal or unlikely at the moment. Compare the first two lines: only the second speaker treats having enough money as unreal.
| Type | Example |
|---|---|
| real | Wenn ich Zeit habe, helfe ich dir. |
| real | Falls ich Zeit habe, helfe ich dir. |
| unreal | Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dir helfen. |
| whenever | Immer wenn ich Zeit habe, helfe ich dir. |
