About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A woman sits at a kitchen table typing on a laptop next to an open parcel and a broken vacuum cleaner.

01

From verb to noun

Formal letters often use nouns where everyday speech uses verbs. Liefern becomes die Lieferung, and erstatten becomes die Erstattung. Nouns ending in -ung are always feminine. Eva writes to a shop about a broken vacuum cleaner.

MeaningVerbNoun

Ich habe im Mai einen Staubsauger bei Ihnen bestellt.

I ordered a vacuum cleaner from you in May.

Nach der Lieferung habe ich einen Defekt festgestellt.

After the delivery, I noticed a fault.

Auch nach der Reparatur funktioniert das Gerät nicht.

Even after the repair, the device does not work.

Ich bitte um die Erstattung des Kaufpreises.

I request a refund of the purchase price.

Der Kaufpreis is the purchase price, der Defekt a fault and feststellen means to notice or find. Nominal style often adds a genitive: die Erstattung des Kaufpreises.

02

A clause becomes a phrase

Nominal style turns a whole clause into a short phrase with a preposition. Als das Paket ankam becomes bei der Ankunft. Weil sich die Lieferung verspätet hat becomes wegen der Verspätung. The result sounds shorter and more formal.

Als das Paket ankam, war es beschädigt.

When the parcel arrived, it was damaged.

Bei der Ankunft war das Paket beschädigt.

On arrival, the parcel was damaged.

Wegen der Verspätung konnte ich das Gerät nicht nutzen.

Because of the delay, I couldn't use the device.

Ich warte seit drei Wochen auf eine Antwort.

I have been waiting three weeks for a reply.

Wegen takes the genitive: wegen der Verspätung. Warten auf takes the accusative: auf eine Antwort. Beschädigt means damaged.

03

Fixed phrases in the letter

A formal complaint opens and closes with fixed phrases. Start with Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren when you don't know the name. State your complaint, make a clear request with a deadline and end with Mit freundlichen Grüßen.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hiermit möchte ich mich über Ihren Service beschweren.

I hereby wish to complain about your service.

Ich bitte Sie um eine Antwort bis Ende des Monats.

Please reply by the end of the month.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Kind regards

Hiermit means hereby. The lines here are shown as separate sentences. In the letter itself, the text after the greeting's comma starts with a lower-case letter: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, hiermit möchte ich … Bis Ende des Monats uses the genitive: by the end of the month.
