01
Plans with a time phrase
German often uses the present tense for the future. When a time phrase such as morgen, nächste Woche or im Sommer shows that something is in the future, the present tense is enough. This is normal for fixed plans and timetables.
Nächste Woche fange ich einen neuen Job an.
Next week I'm starting a new job.
Im Sommer fliegen wir nach Portugal.
In the summer we're flying to Portugal.
Morgen habe ich ein Vorstellungsgespräch.
Tomorrow I have a job interview.
Der Kurs beginnt am Montag um neun Uhr.
The course starts on Monday at nine o'clock.
When the time phrase starts the sentence, the verb still comes second and the subject follows. Das Vorstellungsgespräch is a job interview.
02
Predictions and promises
Future I uses a form of werden plus an infinitive at the end: Ich werde pünktlich sein. It is typical for predictions, for promises and for intentions, especially when there is no time phrase.
Morgen wird es regnen.
It will rain tomorrow.
In zehn Jahren werden viele Autos elektrisch fahren.
In ten years, many cars will run on electricity.
Ich werde mehr Sport machen.
I'm going to do more sport.
Keine Sorge, ich werde pünktlich sein.
Don't worry, I'll be on time.
Werden forms: ich werde, du wirst, er wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie werden. Elektrisch means electric, and keine Sorge means don't worry.
03
Present or future?
Without a time phrase, the present tense usually describes now: Ich lerne Spanisch. Future I makes it clear that something is still to come: Ich werde Spanisch lernen. In a dass-clause, werden moves to the very end.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| plan with a time phrase | Morgen besuche ich meine Oma. |
| prediction | Das wird teuer. |
| promise or intention | Ich werde dir helfen. |
| no time phrase: now | Ich lerne Spanisch. |
Ich lerne Spanisch.
I'm learning Spanish.
Ich werde Spanisch lernen.
I'm going to learn Spanish.
Nora glaubt, dass das Projekt erfolgreich sein wird.
Nora thinks that the project will be successful.
Vielleicht werden wir eines Tages ein Haus kaufen.
Maybe one day we'll buy a house.
Eines Tages means one day, and erfolgreich means successful. Vielleicht takes position one, so werden follows it directly.
