B1-59 · Add tone with mal, doch and ja

Gaming

Use the modal particles mal, doch and ja to make requests friendlier, encourage, remind and show surprise while talking about video games and esports.

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Two adult friends sit on a sofa playing a video game, and one leans over to show the other a move on the controller.

01

mal: casual requests

Modal particles are small words that add a tone, not new information. Mal makes requests and suggestions sound casual and friendly: Zeig mal! It comes from einmal, meaning once, but here it just softens the request.

Zeig mal, welches Spiel du gekauft hast!

Show me which game you bought!

Kannst du mal kurz den Controller halten?

Can you hold the controller for a moment?

Probier das neue Level mal aus!

Give the new level a try!

Hör mal, das Turnier fängt gleich an.

Listen, the tournament is about to start.

In friendly yes-or-no requests such as Kannst du mal …?, mal is the usual particle. Der Controller is the controller, das Level a level and das Turnier a tournament.

02

doch: encouraging and reminding

In requests, doch adds encouragement or a little impatience: Spiel doch mit! In statements, doch reminds someone of something they should already know: Das habe ich dir doch gesagt. As a one-word answer, Doch says yes to a negative question.

Spiel doch mit, wir brauchen noch eine Person!

Do join in, we need one more person!

Das habe ich dir doch schon gestern gesagt.

But I already told you that yesterday.

Hast du keine Lust auf das Turnier? Doch, sehr gern!

Don't you feel like going to the tournament? Yes, I'd love to!

Du kennst doch die Regeln.

You know the rules, after all.

After a question with nicht or kein, answer Doch to mean yes, not Ja. Die Regel is a rule; Lust haben auf means to feel like doing something.

03

ja: surprise and shared knowledge

Ja in the middle of a sentence shows surprise, or points to something both speakers already know: Du spielst ja richtig gut! Unlike the answer word ja, this particle never starts the sentence and is not stressed.
