An adult reading group sits around a table in a library, sharing old leather-bound books and a book of fairy-tale pictures.

01

dessen: whose (masculine and neuter)

A genitive relative pronoun shows possession: whose. For a masculine or neuter noun, use dessen: Goethe ist ein Dichter, dessen Werke man noch heute liest. The noun after dessen has no article.

Goethe ist ein Dichter, dessen Werke man noch heute in der Schule liest.

Goethe is a poet whose works people still read at school today.

Faust ist ein Drama, dessen Hauptfigur einen Pakt mit dem Teufel schließt.

Schiller ist ein Autor, dessen Drama Wilhelm Tell in der Schweiz spielt.

Schiller is an author whose drama Wilhelm Tell is set in Switzerland.

Dessen refers back to the owner, not to the thing that is owned. Das Werk means the work, das Drama the drama and das Märchen the fairy tale. Goethe wrote Faust, and Schiller wrote Wilhelm Tell.

02

deren: whose (feminine and plural)

For a feminine noun or a plural, use deren: die Brüder Grimm, deren Märchen weltbekannt sind. Again, there is no article after deren, and the verb of the relative clause goes to the end.

Die Brüder Grimm, deren Märchen weltbekannt sind, sammelten alte Geschichten.

The Brothers Grimm, whose fairy tales are known all over the world, collected old stories.

Ich kenne eine Lehrerin, deren Lieblingsbuch Faust ist.

I know a teacher whose favourite book is Faust.

03

Talking about classics

Choose the pronoun by the gender and number of the owner: der Autor and das Buch take dessen, die Autorin and die Autoren take deren. The relative clause comes right after the noun it describes.
