A woman prepares a bicycle by her front door in the morning while a wall clock and a breakfast cup sit nearby.

01

A routine that still continues

Mina cycles to work now. Use seit with a starting point or a length of time when something began earlier and still continues. German usually uses the present for this, even where English uses have been.

I have been cycling to work for a month.

Seit einer Woche stehe ich früher auf.

I have been getting up earlier for a week.

I have lived near the office for two years.

Seit Montag frühstücke ich zu Hause.

I have been eating breakfast at home since Monday.

Seit as a preposition takes the dative: seit einem Monat, seit einer Woche, seit zwei Jahren. Seit Montag names the starting day. It does not mean that the routine has ended.

02

Since something changed

Seitdem connects a continuing situation to the event that started it. As a conjunction, it introduces a clause with its verb at the end. Seit can also introduce such a clause. Both forms mean since in these examples.

Since I have lived here, I have often walked.

Since I started getting up earlier, I have had more time in the mornings.

Ich habe ein Fahrrad gekauft. Seitdem fahre ich jeden Tag.

I bought a bicycle. Since then, I have ridden every day.

Seitdem wir zusammen kochen, essen wir regelmäßiger.

Since we started cooking together, we have been eating more regularly.

In the second version, seitdem means since then and belongs to a main clause, with gehe in second position.

03

Until the routine ends

Bis gives the endpoint of a period. It can introduce a time such as acht Uhr or a clause such as bis der Bus kommt. Compare seit acht Uhr, since eight, with bis acht Uhr, until eight.

Ich arbeite bis fünf Uhr.

I work until five o'clock.

Ich warte, bis der Bus kommt.

I wait until the bus comes.

Until the food is ready, I read the newspaper.

In the evenings, I stay awake until my partner comes home.

A bis clause has its finite verb at the end. It tells you when waiting or another ongoing activity ends. Seit and seitdem look back to a beginning; bis looks ahead to a limit.
