01

Eigentlich: actually and by the way

In a statement, eigentlich means actually: it shows that reality is different from the plan or from what people expect, and often comes with aber. In a question, eigentlich signals casual interest, a bit like by the way. It can start a statement, but in a question it never comes first: it follows the verb and any short pronouns.

Eigentlich wollte ich nur einen Witz machen.

Actually, I only wanted to make a joke.

Eigentlich mag ich keine Ironie, aber das war lustig.

Actually, I don't like irony, but that was funny.

Was machst du eigentlich beruflich?

So what do you actually do for a living?

Wer hat dir eigentlich diesen Witz erzählt?

Who told you this joke, by the way?

Der Witz is the joke, die Ironie is irony and der Humor is humour. Do not confuse the particle with the adjective eigentlich, as in der eigentliche Grund, the real reason.

02

Eben and halt: that's just how it is

Eben and halt say that something is simply the way it is and cannot be changed. They sound calm or a little resigned. Both come after the conjugated verb, never at the start of the sentence: Er ist halt so.

Mein Bruder lacht über jeden Witz, er ist halt so.

My brother laughs at every joke; that's just how he is.

Ironie versteht eben nicht jeder.

Not everyone understands irony, that's just the way it is.

Der Witz war schlecht, das passiert eben.

The joke was bad; these things happen.

Ich kann eben keine Witze erzählen.

I just can't tell jokes.

Halt is common in southern Germany, Austria and casual speech; eben is more usual in the north. Eben has other meanings too: Er ist eben gekommen means he has just arrived, and Halt! on its own means Stop!

03

Choosing the right particle

Eben can also be a short answer on its own: Eben! means Exactly! and shows full agreement. Use eigentlich for a contrast with reality or for a casual question, and eben or halt for things that simply are as they are. Eben and halt are not used in questions.
