In hospital
Use nicht brauchen zu and nur brauchen zu, and tell them apart from müssen and nicht dürfen, during a hospital stay.

No need: nicht brauchen zu
Nicht brauchen zu means the same as nicht müssen: there is no need to do something. Brauchen is the conjugated verb, and zu plus the infinitive goes to the end: Sie brauchen nicht zu warten. With a noun, use kein instead of nicht.

You don't need to wait.
Morgen brauchen Sie nicht nüchtern zu sein.
Tomorrow you don't need to be on an empty stomach.

Do not use zu with müssen: Sie müssen nicht warten. Nüchtern means on an empty stomach, and die Operation is an operation.

Only need to: nur brauchen zu
Nur brauchen zu means that one small thing is enough: Sie brauchen nur zu klingeln. Brauchen agrees with the subject, and zu plus the infinitive still goes to the end.
Sie brauchen nur zu klingeln.
You only need to ring.
Wenn Sie Schmerzen haben, brauchen Sie es nur zu sagen.
If you are in pain, you only need to say so.
Der Patient braucht nur noch eine Nacht zu bleiben.
The patient only needs to stay one more night.
Wir brauchen nur noch die Entlassungspapiere abzuholen.
We only need to pick up the discharge papers.
With a separable verb, zu goes between the prefix and the verb: abzuholen, aufzustehen. Die Entlassung is the discharge from hospital.

On the ward
Brauchen with zu is used with a negation such as nicht or kein, or with a restriction such as nur. For a real obligation, use müssen: Sie müssen ein Formular ausfüllen. With a noun, brauchen means to need and takes no zu.
Für die Aufnahme brauche ich nur meine Versichertenkarte.
For admission I only need my insurance card.
Vor der Untersuchung müssen Sie ein Formular ausfüllen.
Before the examination you have to fill in a form.
Sie dürfen nach der Operation nicht aufstehen.
You are not allowed to get up after the operation.
Die Visite ist um neun Uhr auf der Station.
The ward round is at nine o'clock on the ward.
Nicht dürfen means that something is not allowed, which is different from nicht brauchen zu. Die Aufnahme is admission, die Station the ward and die Visite the doctors' ward round.
