Separable: the prefix moves
Verbs with durch-, über-, um- and wieder- can be separable or inseparable. If the prefix is stressed, the verb is separable: in a main clause, the prefix goes to the end, as in Wir stellen um. Most verbs with durch-, um- and wieder- in this lesson are separable.
Die Forscherin führt im Labor einen Versuch durch.
The researcher carries out an experiment in the lab.
Viele Betriebe stellen auf neue Maschinen um.
Many businesses are switching over to new machines.
Die Erfindung setzt sich schnell durch.
The invention catches on quickly.
In der Werkstatt verwenden wir alte Teile wieder.
In the workshop, we reuse old parts.
Sich durchsetzen means to catch on or become accepted; umstellen auf means to switch over to. Der Erfinder and die Erfinderin are the inventor; die Erfindung is the invention.

Inseparable: the prefix stays
If the prefix is not stressed, the verb is inseparable: the prefix always stays at the front, as in Sie wiederholt den Versuch. All the über- verbs here are inseparable, like überprüfen, übersetzen and überzeugen.

Inseparable verbs never split, even at the end of a dass-clause: dass sie den Versuch wiederholt. Das Gerät means the device; die Anleitung means the instructions.

An inventor's story
In the Perfekt, separable verbs put ge- after the prefix: durchgeführt, umgestellt. Inseparable verbs have no ge- at all: wiederholt, überzeugt. This short story is about an invented inventor.
Die Erfinderin hat den Versuch im Labor durchgeführt.
The inventor carried out the experiment in the lab.
Sie hat den Versuch oft wiederholt.
She repeated the experiment often.
Ihre Firma hat die Produktion auf Maschinen umgestellt.
Her company switched production over to machines.
Am Ende hat sie alle Kritiker überzeugt.
In the end, she convinced all the critics.
Some verbs exist in both types with different meanings: übersetzen, unstressed, means to translate, but stressed it means to ferry across. Wieder- is separable in most verbs, such as wiederverwenden; wiederholen meaning to repeat is the main exception.
