01

Keep the question word

Eva interviews at a fictional studio. A polite opening such as Können Sie mir sagen makes a question less abrupt. Keep the question word in the indirect part and move its conjugated verb to the end.

Können Sie mir sagen, wann die Arbeit beginnt?

Can you tell me when work starts?

Wissen Sie, wie groß das Team ist?

Do you know how large the team is?

Könnten Sie mir erklären, welche Aufgaben ich übernehme?

Could you explain which tasks I will take on?

Darf ich fragen, wo mein Arbeitsplatz ist?

May I ask where my workstation is?

Compare Wann beginnt die Arbeit? with Können Sie mir sagen, wann die Arbeit beginnt? The introductory question keeps its own normal question order.

02

Use ob for yes or no

A direct yes-or-no question has no question word. In an indirect question, add ob, meaning whether. Eva asks about training and the next stage of the interview process.

Können Sie mir sagen, ob eine Einarbeitung geplant ist?

Can you tell me whether an induction period is planned?

Darf ich fragen, ob ich im Team arbeite?

May I ask whether I will work in the team?

Wissen Sie, ob es ein zweites Gespräch gibt?

Do you know whether there will be a second interview?

Könnten Sie mir sagen, ob der Vertrag schon fertig ist?

Could you tell me whether the contract is ready yet?

Ob introduces a genuine yes-or-no question. Do not replace it with wenn when you mean whether. Wenn would introduce a condition or a time relationship.

03

Talk about strengths

The interviewer asks Eva about her strengths. Indirect questions can also appear after a statement such as Ich möchte wissen. The outer sentence determines whether the whole sentence needs a question mark.

Ich möchte wissen, welche Stärken Sie mitbringen.

I would like to know what strengths you bring.

Könnten Sie beschreiben, wie Sie im Team arbeiten?

Could you describe how you work in a team?

Darf ich fragen, worin Ihre Stärke liegt?

May I ask what your strength lies in?

Ich erkläre gern, warum ich gut zu Ihrem Team passe.

I am happy to explain why I am a good fit for your team.

An indirect question still ends with its conjugated verb. In Ich möchte wissen, wie Sie arbeiten, arbeiten belongs to Sie in the embedded question.
