01

A person and a thing

Aylin's children grow up with German and Turkish. Verbs like erklären, erzählen, schenken and zeigen often take a person in the dative and a thing in the accusative. When both objects are nouns, the dative person usually comes first: Aylin erklärt ihrem Sohn ein Wort.

Aylin erklärt ihrem Sohn ein türkisches Wort.

Aylin explains a Turkish word to her son.

Die Oma erzählt den Kindern Märchen auf Türkisch.

Grandma tells the children fairy tales in Turkish.

Jonas schenkt seiner Freundin ein Wörterbuch.

Jonas gives his girlfriend a dictionary.

Die Lehrerin zeigt den Schülern ein Video über Akzente.

The teacher shows the pupils a video about accents.

Zweisprachig means bilingual. Die Muttersprache is your mother tongue, and der Akzent is an accent. Das Märchen is a fairy tale.

02

Two pronouns

When both objects are pronouns, the order turns around: the accusative comes before the dative. Ich gebe es ihm. Object pronouns stand right after the conjugated verb, or right after the subject when the subject follows the verb, as in a question.

Erklärst du es mir noch einmal?

Will you explain it to me again?

Aylin erklärt es ihm.

Jonas schenkt es ihr zum Geburtstag.

Jonas gives it to her for her birthday.

Die Lehrerin zeigt es ihnen.

The teacher shows it to them.

Remember the dative pronouns: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, uns, euch, ihnen, Ihnen. Es, ihn and sie are accusative here and come first.

03

A pronoun and a noun

When one object is a pronoun and the other is a noun, the pronoun comes first, whatever its case. Ich erkläre ihm die Regel, but Ich erkläre sie meinem Bruder.
