B1-95 · Talk about weddings, births and funerals in time

Life events

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Wedding guests sit at a long table under a large tree while the bride's father stands and gives a speech.

01

Before, after and during a wedding

Vor, nach and bei take the dative. Vor der Hochzeit means before the wedding, nach der Trauung after the ceremony, and bei dem Essen, usually shortened to beim Essen, during the meal. Während also means during, but it takes the genitive: während des Festes.

Vor der Hochzeit waren alle sehr nervös.

Before the wedding, everyone was very nervous.

Nach der Trauung haben wir draußen gefeiert.

After the ceremony, we celebrated outside.

Beim Essen hat der Vater eine Rede gehalten.

During the meal, the father gave a speech.

Während des Festes hat es kurz geregnet.

During the party, it rained briefly.

Most masculine and neuter nouns add -s or -es in the genitive singular: des Festes. Die Trauung is the wedding ceremony and eine Rede halten means to give a speech.

02

Seit and vor: a new baby

Seit with the dative says since when something has been true, and the verb stays in the present tense: Seit einem Monat ist er auf der Welt. Vor with a time phrase means ago and goes with a past tense: Er wurde vor einem Monat geboren.

Seit der Geburt unserer Tochter schlafen wir wenig.

Since our daughter was born, we haven't been sleeping much.

Unser Sohn wurde vor einem Monat geboren.

Our son was born a month ago.

Seit einem Monat ist er auf der Welt.

He has been in the world for a month.

Seit zwei Wochen ist Nora in Elternzeit.

Nora has been on parental leave for two weeks.

Do not use seit with a past tense for something that is still true. Die Geburt is the birth, auf der Welt sein means to have been born, and die Elternzeit is parental leave.

03

The same prepositions describe sad events too: bei der Beerdigung means at the funeral and nach dem Tod after the death. The table sums up all five prepositions with their case.
