01

Two benefits, with emphasis

Nicht nur ... sondern auch means not only ... but also. It adds an emphasized second point. The first point remains true; nicht nur does not deny it.

Eva repariert nicht nur Lampen, sondern auch Fahrräder.

Eva repairs not only lamps but also bicycles.

Wir sparen nicht nur Geld, sondern auch Material.

We save not only money but also material.

In this fictional repair café, people repair objects and exchange skills. Wiederverwenden means to reuse and reparieren means to repair. The paired construction belongs in the German examples because it is this chapter's grammar.

02

Match the grammatical form

Connect two adjectives or two infinitives in the same way. A shared modal can apply to both actions. Place nicht nur and sondern auch before the matching parts.

Die Tasche ist nicht nur praktisch, sondern auch haltbar.

The bag is not only practical but also durable.

Wir wollen nicht nur kaufen, sondern auch tauschen.

We want not only to buy but also to swap.

Gebraucht means used or second-hand, haltbar durable and praktisch practical. Parallel wording lets the reader compare the two points easily.

03

Emphasize an action at the start

A whole nicht nur phrase can come first: Nicht nur Geld spart Eva, sondern auch Material. The finite verb still occupies the second position. This order puts extra emphasis on what is added.

Nicht nur Geld spart Eva, sondern auch Material.

Eva saves not only money but also material.

Nicht nur Kleidung kauft Ben gebraucht, sondern auch Möbel.

Ben buys not only clothing but also furniture second-hand.

Nicht nur Fahrräder reparieren wir, sondern auch Lampen.

We repair not only bicycles but also lamps.

Nicht nur Bücher tauscht Mara, sondern auch Spiele.

Mara swaps not only books but also games.

The ordinary order is often easier: Eva spart nicht nur Geld, sondern auch Material. Use the fronted version when you want to emphasize the paired objects.
