01
If things were different
To imagine a situation that is not real, use Konjunktiv II in both parts. The wenn part often has hätte or wäre at the end. The other part uses würde plus an infinitive at the end: Wenn ich ein Auto hätte, würde ich aufs Land fahren.
Wenn ich ein Auto hätte, würde ich am Wochenende aufs Land fahren.
If I had a car, I would drive to the countryside at the weekend.
Wenn der Bus pünktlicher wäre, würde ich ihn öfter nehmen.
If the bus were more punctual, I would take it more often.
Wenn die Radwege sicherer wären, würden mehr Leute mit dem Rad fahren.
If the cycle paths were safer, more people would cycle.
Wenn das Ticket billiger wäre, würde Murat nicht mehr mit dem Auto fahren.
If the ticket were cheaper, Murat would stop driving his car.
The wenn part comes first, so the second part starts with its verb: würde ich, würden mehr Leute. Pünktlich means on time and der Radweg is a cycle path.
02
All the forms
Hätte, wäre and würde change their endings like past tense verbs. For most other verbs, use würde plus the infinitive, even in the wenn part: Wenn wir näher wohnen würden. These lines come from a survey about getting to work.
| Person | to be | to have | would |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | ich wäre | ich hätte | ich würde |
| you, informal | du wärst | du hättest | du würdest |
| he, she, it | er/sie/es wäre | er/sie/es hätte | er/sie/es würde |
| we | wir wären | wir hätten | wir würden |
| you all | ihr wärt | ihr hättet | ihr würdet |
| they, you formal | sie/Sie wären | sie/Sie hätten | sie/Sie würden |
Wenn du ein Fahrrad hättest, würdest du schneller zur Arbeit kommen.
If you had a bike, you would get to work faster.
Wenn wir näher an der Arbeit wohnen würden, würden wir zu Fuß gehen.
If we lived closer to work, we would walk.
Wenn ihr mehr Zeit hättet, würdet ihr dann mit dem Zug reisen?
If you all had more time, would you travel by train then?
Wenn Sie keinen Führerschein hätten, wie würden Sie zur Arbeit fahren?
If you did not have a driving licence, how would you get to work?
Ich and er/sie/es share the same form: ich wäre, sie wäre. Der Führerschein is a driving licence.
03
Real or imagined?
Compare a real condition with an imagined one. Wenn ich Zeit habe uses the present tense: it really happens sometimes. Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte uses Konjunktiv II: it is not real, only imagined. The würde part can also come first.
Wenn ich Zeit habe, fahre ich mit dem Rad zur Arbeit.
When I have time, I cycle to work.
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich jeden Tag mit dem Rad fahren.
If I had more time, I would cycle every day.
Ich würde öfter mit der Bahn fahren, wenn die Tickets billiger wären.
I would travel by train more often if the tickets were cheaper.
Was würdest du machen, wenn dein Auto kaputt wäre?
What would you do if your car were broken?
When the main part comes first, the wenn part keeps its verb at the end: Ich würde öfter mit der Bahn fahren, wenn die Tickets billiger wären. Kaputt means broken.
