About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A small group of adult visitors follows a museum guide through a quiet gallery with paintings and display cases.

01

Who did it? von + dative

In a passive sentence, von introduces the person or institution that does the action: Das Museum wurde von einem Kaufmann gegründet. Von always takes the dative, so von dem usually becomes vom. This chapter follows a visit to an invented town museum.

The guided tour is led by a student.

Das Museum wurde von einem reichen Kaufmann gegründet.

The museum was founded by a rich merchant.

Die Sammlung wird vom Land finanziert.

The collection is funded by the state.

Die Ausstellung wurde von vielen Schulklassen besucht.

The exhibition was visited by many school classes.

Die Sammlung means the collection, die Ausstellung the exhibition and die Führung the guided tour. You can leave out the von phrase when the doer is not important.

02

How did it happen? durch + accusative

Durch introduces a cause or a means rather than a person: Das Gemälde wurde durch einen Brand beschädigt. Durch always takes the accusative. Think of durch as answering how, or through what, something happened.

Das alte Gemälde wurde durch einen Brand beschädigt.

The old painting was damaged by a fire.

Der Saal wird durch große Fenster beleuchtet.

The hall is lit by large windows.

Die Vase wurde durch Zufall bei Bauarbeiten gefunden.

The vase was found by chance during building work.

Die Besucher werden durch kurze Texte an den Wänden informiert.

Visitors are informed by short texts on the walls.

Der Brand means the fire, das Gemälde the painting and der Saal the hall. Durch Zufall is a fixed phrase meaning by chance. With forces of nature, von is common too: vom Sturm beschädigt.

03

On the guided tour

On a tour, both phrases often appear together. Use von for people and institutions, and durch for events, things and methods. Then check the article: von needs the dative, durch the accusative.
