01
My story in different tenses
This final B1 chapter reviews what you have learned through a short talk about your own life. You need several tenses: the present for now, the Präteritum or Perfekt for the past, the Plusquamperfekt for something even earlier, and Futur I for plans. Als introduces a single event in the past, and nachdem goes with the Plusquamperfekt when the main clause is in the past.
| Tense | Example |
|---|---|
| present | Ich wohne in Leipzig. |
| Perfekt | Ich habe viel gelernt. |
| Präteritum | Ich kam im März an. |
| Plusquamperfekt | Ich hatte vorher nie Deutsch gelernt. |
| Futur I | Ich werde weiterlernen. |
In meinem Vortrag geht es um mein erstes Jahr in Deutschland.
My talk is about my first year in Germany.
Als ich zum ersten Mal nach Deutschland kam, sprach ich nur wenig Deutsch.
When I first came to Germany, I spoke only a little German.
Nachdem ich einen Kurs besucht hatte, fand ich eine Arbeit.
After I had taken a course, I found a job.
Nächstes Jahr werde ich eine Deutschprüfung machen.
Next year I will take a German exam.
Use als, not wenn, for one event in the past: Als ich zum ersten Mal kam. Der Vortrag is a presentation or talk, and die Prüfung is the exam.

Connecting ideas
Connectors link your ideas. Weil and obwohl start a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end. Deshalb and trotzdem are adverbs: when they take the first position in a main clause, the verb follows directly.
| Meaning | Connector | Example |
|---|---|---|
| because | weil | weil ich müde war |
| that's why | deshalb | deshalb blieb ich zu Hause |
| although | obwohl | obwohl ich müde war |
| nevertheless | trotzdem | trotzdem ging ich aus |
Ich habe viel Deutsch gesprochen, weil meine Kollegen kein Englisch konnten.
I spoke a lot of German because my colleagues couldn't speak English.
Meine Kollegen konnten kein Englisch, deshalb habe ich viel Deutsch gesprochen.
My colleagues couldn't speak English, so I spoke a lot of German.
Obwohl die Bürokratie anstrengend war, bin ich geblieben.
Although the bureaucracy was exhausting, I stayed.
Die Bürokratie war anstrengend, trotzdem bin ich geblieben.
The bureaucracy was exhausting; I stayed nevertheless.
Weil gives a reason and deshalb a consequence. Obwohl and trotzdem both express a contrast. Die Bürokratie is bureaucracy and anstrengend means exhausting.

Presenting and summing up
A good talk has a clear structure: start with Zuerst möchte ich …, connect the parts, and end with Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass … before you thank your audience. Seit with the present tense describes a situation that started in the past and is still true.
Zuerst möchte ich kurz erzählen, wie alles angefangen hat.
First, I'd like to tell you briefly how it all started.
Seit ich in Leipzig wohne, fühle ich mich hier zu Hause.
