01
People in the building
A relative clause can begin with a preposition and a pronoun. The preposition comes first and decides the case. For people you talk or work with, use mit plus the dative: mit dem, mit der, mit denen.
The neighbour whom I often talk with lives on the ground floor.
The neighbour with whom we share the garden is called Aylin.
The people with whom I am planning the party live next door.
The couple whom we like talking with is new to the building.
Do not leave mit at the end as English sometimes leaves with. German keeps the pair together at the beginning of the relative clause. The finite verb still goes at the end.
02
Shared spaces and small problems
Prepositions also help describe places and things. Location with in or auf uses the dative. Für takes the accusative. A shared courtyard, a blocked corridor and a borrowed key can all become the subject of a polite conversation.
The courtyard where we are sitting belongs to the building.
The bench on which we are waiting stands in the courtyard.
The noise that annoys us comes from the cellar.
The door for which I have a key leads to the garden.
Ask whether the phrase describes a location or belongs to a fixed verb pattern. In dem wir sitzen gives a location. Über den wir uns ärgern belongs to sich ärgern über + accusative, meaning to be annoyed about something.
03
Find a practical solution
The neighbours plan a meeting and agree where to put their bicycles. Relative clauses let them identify the exact person, place or object they mean. Use a concrete description before discussing a complaint.
The neighbour at whose home the meeting takes place has invited everyone.
The neighbour whom we are waiting for will be here shortly.
The rule we are talking about applies to all bicycles.
The compromise with which everyone is satisfied is simple.
Bei and von always take the dative. Warten auf takes the accusative. These fixed patterns differ from a location such as auf der Bank. Learn auf jemanden warten as a whole phrase.
