Having something done

Lassen plus an infinitive at the end means that someone else does the action: Ich lasse meinen Laptop reparieren. It can also mean to allow or to leave: Sie lässt die Kinder nicht allein surfen. The infinitive has no zu.

Paul lässt seinen Laptop reparieren.

Paul has his laptop repaired.

Eva lässt sich ein neues Passwort schicken.

Eva has a new password sent to her.

Ich lasse mein Handy nie entsperrt auf dem Tisch liegen.

I never leave my phone unlocked on the table.

Lasst eure Kinder nicht allein im Internet surfen.

Don't let your children surf the internet alone.

Lassen changes its vowel: du lässt, er lässt, but ihr lasst. Das Passwort is the password; reparieren means to repair.

Seeing and hearing an action

With sehen and hören, a second verb describes the action you notice. It goes to the end as an infinitive without zu: Ich höre das Handy klingeln.

Ich höre mein Handy klingeln.

I hear my phone ringing.

Aylin sieht eine fremde Nachricht auf ihrem Bildschirm erscheinen.

Aylin sees a strange message appear on her screen.

Murat sieht seinen Kollegen auf einen unbekannten Link klicken.

Murat sees his colleague click on an unknown link.

Im Kurs hören wir eine Expertin über Betrug im Internet sprechen.

In the course, we hear an expert talk about online fraud.

The person or thing you see or hear is in the accusative: Ich sehe den Kollegen klicken. Der Betrug means fraud or a scam; der Link is a link.

Nora hört den Anrufer nach ihrer PIN fragen und legt sofort auf.

Nora hears the caller ask for her PIN and hangs up immediately.

Tim sieht Geld von seinem Konto verschwinden und ruft die Bank an.

Tim sees money disappear from his account and calls the bank.

Sich unter Druck setzen lassen means to let yourself be pressured; auflegen means to hang up. A real bank will not ask for your PIN on the phone.
