01
hier, dort, drüben
Adverbs of place say where something is. Hier means here, near the speaker. Dort means there, further away. Drüben means over there, often on the other side of a street, a river or a border. In speech, da can replace both hier and dort.
Hier im Norden sagt man oft Moin.
Here in the north, people often say Moin.
Dort im Süden grüßt man mit Grüß Gott.
There in the south, people greet each other with Grüß Gott.
Siehst du das Haus da drüben? Dort wohnt meine Tante.
Do you see the house over there? My aunt lives there.
Drüben auf der anderen Seite des Flusses spricht man einen anderen Dialekt.
Over on the other side of the river, people speak a different dialect.
Der Dialekt means the dialect and die Region the region. Moin is a greeting in the north; in the south many people say Grüß Gott. Da drüben is a common combination: over there.
02
oben and unten
Oben means up or at the top, and unten means down or at the bottom. Germans also use them for regions, as if they were looking at a map: oben im Norden, unten im Süden.
Oben im Norden ist das Land flach.
Up in the north, the land is flat.
Unten im Süden gibt es hohe Berge.
Down in the south, there are high mountains.

We take the lift up.
Der Norden is the north and der Süden the south. The high mountains are unten im Süden. For a direction with movement, use nach oben and nach unten.
03
Where? or Where to?
Wo? asks for a position, and wohin? asks for a direction. For a direction, German uses different forms: hierher means to here and dorthin means to there. Compare: Ich wohne dort. Ich fahre morgen dorthin.
| Meaning | Position: wo? | Direction: wohin? |
|---|---|---|
| here | hier | hierher |
| there | dort | dorthin |
| up | oben | nach oben |
| down | unten | nach unten |

I come from Bavaria, but I live here in Hamburg now.
Nächstes Jahr ziehe ich wieder dorthin.

Kommst du am Wochenende hierher?
Are you coming here at the weekend?
Die Kinder laufen schnell nach unten.

After verbs of movement such as kommen, fahren, ziehen or laufen, use a direction form. Die Mundart is another word for dialect, and die Heimat means home region.
