Advice with sollte

Sollte is the Konjunktiv II of sollen. It gives friendly advice: Du solltest den Zug nehmen, you should take the train. The infinitive goes to the end of the sentence. These tips are about eco-tourism.

Du solltest für kurze Strecken lieber den Zug nehmen.

For short distances, you should take the train instead.

Man sollte im Hotel Wasser und Strom sparen.

You should save water and electricity in the hotel.

Ihr solltet in kleinen Restaurants vor Ort essen.

You all should eat in small local restaurants.

Wir sollten auf den markierten Wegen bleiben.

We should stay on the marked paths.

Ich and er/sie/es both use sollte; du solltest, wir sollten, ihr solltet. Vor Ort means locally, where you are staying. Der markierte Weg is a marked path.

müsste and könnte

Müsste, from müssen, is stronger advice: something really ought to happen. Könnte, from können, is a softer suggestion: you could do this. Both work like sollte, with the infinitive at the end.

Travel tips

Here are some tips from a travel blog. Use nicht or kein to give negative advice. Separable verbs join up again at the end: Du könntest die Flasche auffüllen.

Man sollte keine Souvenirs aus geschützten Pflanzen kaufen.

You should not buy souvenirs made from protected plants.

Du solltest nicht für jeden Ausflug ein Taxi nehmen.

You should not take a taxi for every trip.

Vielleicht könntest du deine Flasche am Brunnen auffüllen.

Perhaps you could refill your bottle at the fountain.

Wenn ihr Zeit habt, könntet ihr bei einer Bauernfamilie übernachten.

If you all have time, you could stay overnight with a farming family.

Use kein instead of ein or before a noun without an article: keine Souvenirs. Use nicht for other parts of the sentence: nicht für jeden Ausflug. Die Bauernfamilie is a farming family.
