B1-82 · Tell duties, bans and options apart

Rights and duties

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A young woman hands a form to a clerk at a town hall counter while a couple waits on chairs behind her.

01

Must and must not

Müssen expresses a duty: Alle Bürger müssen Steuern zahlen. Nicht dürfen expresses a ban: something is not allowed. The modal verb comes second and the infinitive goes to the end.

Alle Bürger müssen Steuern zahlen.

All citizens must pay taxes.

Nach einem Umzug muss man sich beim Bürgeramt anmelden.

After a move, you must register at the citizens' office.

Man darf bei Rot nicht über die Straße gehen.

You must not cross the road at a red light.

Ohne Führerschein darf man nicht Auto fahren.

You must not drive a car without a licence.

English must not is nicht dürfen in German, not nicht müssen. Die Steuern are taxes, der Führerschein is a driving licence and sich anmelden means to register your address.

02

You don't have to

Nicht müssen means that something is not necessary. Nicht brauchen zu means the same: Du brauchst den Antrag nicht persönlich abzugeben. Brauchen works like this only with nicht, kein or nur, and the infinitive takes zu.

Du musst den Antrag nicht persönlich abgeben.

You don't have to hand in the application in person.

Du brauchst den Antrag nicht persönlich abzugeben.

You don't need to hand in the application in person.

Sie brauchen keine Gebühr zu bezahlen.

You don't need to pay a fee.

Wir brauchen nur das Formular auszufüllen.

We only need to fill in the form.

With separable verbs, zu goes between the prefix and the verb: abzugeben, auszufüllen. Der Antrag is an application, die Gebühr a fee and das Formular a form.

03

Three meanings side by side

Compare the three forms before you choose. A duty uses müssen, a ban uses nicht dürfen, and something optional uses nicht müssen or nicht brauchen zu. The last two examples follow Murat, who wants to become a German citizen.
