Es gibt: what exists
Es gibt plus the accusative says that something exists: Es gibt eine neue Studie. Es stays the same and gibt stays singular, even with plural nouns: Es gibt viele Apps.
Es gibt eine neue Studie über Schlaf.
There is a new study about sleep.
In unserer Stadt gibt es ein kleines Forschungszentrum.
There is a small research centre in our town.
Für diese Theorie gibt es noch keinen Beweis.
There is no proof for this theory yet.
Heute gibt es viele Apps, die den Schlaf messen.
Today there are many apps that measure sleep.
When another element comes first, es follows the verb: Heute gibt es viele Apps. Die Studie means the study; der Beweis means the proof.

Es geht um: what it is about
Es geht um plus the accusative names the topic of a text, film or conversation: In dem Artikel geht es um Schlaf. The subject is always es, and um is fixed.
In dem Artikel geht es um gesunden Schlaf.
The article is about healthy sleep.
Worum geht es in der Sendung?
What is the programme about?
In der Studie geht es um die Frage, wie viel Wasser wir brauchen.
The study is about the question of how much water we need.
Im Podcast geht es heute um eine wichtige Entdeckung.
Today's podcast is about an important discovery.
Say In dem Artikel geht es um …, not Der Artikel geht um …. Ask with worum: Worum geht es? Die Entdeckung means the discovery; die Sendung is a programme.

Es handelt sich um: what something is
Es handelt sich um is more formal. It says exactly what something is: Bei dem Stoff handelt es sich um ein Vitamin. It often starts with bei plus the dative.

The substance is a vitamin.
Bei der Entdeckung handelt es sich um ein neues Material.
The discovery is a new material.
Hier handelt es sich um ein bekanntes Problem.
This is a well-known problem.
Der Film handelt von einer jungen Forscherin.
The film is about a young researcher.
Do not use another subject with handelt sich um: not Der Stoff handelt sich um ein Vitamin. A book or film, however, handelt von its content. Der Stoff here means the substance.
