01

A freelancer's next steps

Eva is planning a fictional freelance design business. Future I uses werden plus an infinitive. It can announce a plan or prediction. The forms are werde, wirst, wird, werden, werdet and werden.

Eva wird nächste Woche ihr Unternehmen gründen.

Eva will start her business next week.

Ich werde morgen ein Angebot schreiben.

I will write a quote tomorrow.

Wir werden neue Kunden suchen.

We will look for new customers.

Ihr werdet die Aufträge gemeinsam planen.

You will plan the commissions together.

Der Auftrag is a commission or job, der Kunde a customer and das Angebot a quote or offer. German often uses the present tense with a future time phrase too.

02

Promises and forecasts

A freelancer can use Future I to promise an action: Ich werde Sie morgen anrufen. A prediction can remain uncertain; words such as wahrscheinlich make that uncertainty explicit.

Ich werde Sie morgen anrufen.

I will phone you tomorrow.

Die Nachfrage wird wahrscheinlich steigen.

Demand will probably rise.

Wirst du das Angebot heute schicken?

Will you send the quote today?

Wann wird Eva die Rechnung senden?

When will Eva send the invoice?

Probably is wahrscheinlich. The future form alone does not guarantee that a forecast will come true. In a question, put werden before the subject or after the question word.

03

A plan inside a dass-clause

In a dass-clause, the finite form of werden goes to the end, after the infinitive: dass Eva neue Kunden suchen wird. This differs from main-clause order, where wird is second.

Eva sagt, dass sie morgen anfangen wird.

Eva says that she will start tomorrow.

Ich hoffe, dass wir neue Kunden finden werden.

I hope that we will find new customers.

Ben glaubt, dass der Auftrag länger dauern wird.

Ben thinks that the commission will take longer.

Wir wissen, dass ihr das Angebot prüfen werdet.

We know that you will check the quote.

Learn the contrast as a pair: Eva wird neue Kunden suchen. Ich glaube, dass Eva neue Kunden suchen wird. The main verb remains an infinitive in both.
