01
Time, cause, manner, place
When several adverbials follow the verb, German usually puts them in this order: time, cause, manner, place. Learners remember it as te-ka-mo-lo: Jonas fährt morgen wegen der Schulung mit dem Zug nach Köln.
| Position | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| time | wann? | morgen |
| cause | warum? | wegen der Schulung |
| manner | wie? | mit dem Zug |
| place | wo? wohin? | nach Köln |
Ich arbeite heute im Homeoffice.

Time answers wann, cause warum, manner wie, and place wo or wohin. Die Schulung means the training session; das Homeoffice means working from home.
02
Automation in the company
Any one element can move to the start of the sentence for emphasis. The verb stays in second position, the subject follows it, and the other adverbials keep their usual order.
Seit letztem Jahr verpackt ein Roboter die Waren automatisch im Lager.
Since last year, a robot has been packing the goods automatically in the warehouse.
Wegen der Automatisierung arbeiten wir heute ganz anders.
Because of automation, we work quite differently today.

Only one element stands before the verb. Die Automatisierung means automation; das Lager is the warehouse and verpacken means to pack.
03
Digital tools in emails and chats
Keep the same order in messages about digital tools. With a separable verb or a modal verb, all the adverbials come before the final part: Ich lade die Datei morgen hoch.
Kannst du die Datei heute noch schnell in den Ordner hochladen?
Can you quickly upload the file to the folder today?
Ich lade sie morgen wegen des Serverausfalls hoch.
I'll upload it tomorrow because of the server outage.
Die Kollegen besprechen das Projekt jeden Morgen kurz im Chat.
