A man and a woman read the morning news at a kitchen table, one with a folded newspaper and one with a tablet.

01

Short headlines

News headlines shorten the passive. They often drop the article and the auxiliary and keep only the participle: Schule eröffnet. The report underneath then gives the full sentence with wurde: Die Schule wurde eröffnet.

Neue Schule in Lindenfeld eröffnet.

New school opened in Lindenfeld.

Die neue Schule in Lindenfeld wurde am Montag eröffnet.

The new school in Lindenfeld was opened on Monday.

Hauptstraße nach Unfall gesperrt.

Main road closed after accident.

Die Hauptstraße wurde nach einem Unfall für drei Stunden gesperrt.

The main road was closed for three hours after an accident.

Read a participle in a headline as a past passive with wurde. Die Schlagzeile means the headline, der Bericht the report and die Nachrichten the news.

02

Current and planned events

For events happening now or planned soon, reports use the present passive with wird or werden. With a modal verb, the infinitive werden goes to the end: Das Fest muss verschoben werden. The table shows the passive forms you meet in the news.

03

Police and accident reports

Reports on recent events often use the passive Perfekt: Ein Mann ist festgenommen worden. They also pass on information from a source, with laut or with a dass-clause. In a dass-clause, the passive auxiliary moves to the end.

Am Abend ist ein Mann festgenommen worden.

A man was arrested in the evening.

Two people were slightly injured in the accident.

Die Polizei meldet, dass niemand schwer verletzt wurde.
