01

What happened on campus?

At the fictional Linden university, Mara looks back on her first week. The past passive uses wurde or wurden plus a past participle. The subject is the person or thing affected by the action.

Die Bibliothek wurde am Montag eröffnet.

The library was opened on Monday.

Die Studierenden wurden am Eingang begrüßt.

The students were welcomed at the entrance.

Der Campus wurde am Nachmittag besichtigt.

The campus was toured in the afternoon.

Die Seminarräume wurden gestern gezeigt.

The seminar rooms were shown yesterday.

Use wurde for a singular third-person subject and wurden for a plural subject. The participle stays at the end.

02

Lectures and coursework

Mara describes her course next. A lecture is a Vorlesung; a seminar is a Seminar. Past passive sentences let her report changes and completed tasks without naming the organiser every time.

Die Vorlesung wurde in einen anderen Raum verlegt.

The lecture was moved to another room.

Im Seminar wurden zwei Texte besprochen.

Two texts were discussed in the seminar.

Die Hausarbeit wurde am Freitag abgegeben.

The term paper was submitted on Friday.

Die Prüfungen wurden von zwei Dozentinnen vorbereitet.

The exams were prepared by two female lecturers.

Keep the tense in wurde or wurden. The participle does not change when the subject becomes plural.

03

Degrees and questions

At a fictional graduation ceremony, Mara helps hand out certificates. Von plus the dative names the person responsible when that detail matters. In a direct question, wurde or wurden comes before the subject.

Der Bachelorabschluss wurde bei der Feier erwähnt.

The bachelor's degree was mentioned at the celebration.

Die Masterabschlüsse wurden in der Rede genannt.

The master's degrees were named in the speech.

Die Urkunden wurden von der Dekanin überreicht.

The certificates were presented by the dean.

Wann wurde das Gruppenfoto gemacht?

When was the group photo taken?

A Bachelorabschluss is a bachelor's degree; a Masterabschluss is a master's degree. These examples describe one invented ceremony, not university regulations.
