01

An action as a noun

Any infinitive can become a noun: trennen, to separate, becomes das Trennen, separating. Write it with a capital letter and use das, because these nouns are always neuter. They name the activity itself.

Das Sortieren dauert nur ein paar Minuten.

Das Recyceln von Glas spart viel Energie.

Für das Sammeln von Altpapier gibt es eine blaue Tonne.

There is a blue bin for collecting waste paper.

Do not add an ending: das Sortieren, not die Sortierung, when you mean the activity. Der Müll is rubbish, das Altpapier waste paper and die Tonne a wheelie bin.

02

beim and zum

Verb nouns often follow beim or zum. Beim, short for bei dem, means while doing something. Zum, short for zu dem, means for doing something and often explains what a thing is for.

03

Verb nouns in sentences

Verb nouns behave like other neuter nouns. They can take an adjective, and after a dative preposition they use dem. Two neighbours, Aylin and Paul, talk about sorting their waste.

Separating correctly is not that hard at all.

Eine Liste an der Küchentür hilft mir beim Sortieren.
