01

If only …

Wenn ich doch nur … expresses a wish that is not true now. It is a wenn-clause on its own, with Konjunktiv II and the verb at the end: Wenn ich doch nur mehr Zeit hätte! You can use doch nur together or just nur.

If only I had more time!

Wenn das Wetter doch nur besser wäre!

If only the weather were better!

Wenn ich nur besser Deutsch sprechen könnte!

If only I could speak German better!

Wenn du doch nur hier wärst!

If only you were here!

These wishes end with an exclamation mark. The Konjunktiv II forms you need most are hätte, wäre, könnte and würde; for du they are hättest, wärst, könntest and würdest.

02

Regrets about the past

For a regret about the past, use hätte or wäre plus a past participle at the end: Wenn ich doch nur mehr gelernt hätte! Choose hätte or wäre in the same way as haben or sein in the Perfekt.

Regrets and hopes

You can also talk about regrets and hopes with ordinary verbs. Bereuen means to regret something that really happened, so it takes the indicative. Hoffen is for things that can still happen, so it takes the indicative too.

Ich bereue, dass ich das Studium abgebrochen habe.

I regret that I dropped out of my degree.

Schade, dass du nicht kommen kannst.

It's a pity that you can't come.

Ich hoffe, dass es morgen klappt.

I hope that it works out tomorrow.

Mein größter Wunsch ist eine Reise nach Japan.

My greatest wish is a trip to Japan.

In wishes, use Konjunktiv II only when the wish is against reality. Schade, dass … means it's a pity that …, and der Wunsch is a wish.
